Ongoing Spinal Pain

Ongoing spinal pain, often referred to as chronic spinal pain, is a condition characterized by persistent pain in the spine.

What is Ongoing Spinal Pain?

Ongoing spinal pain is created when the body splints injured sections of the spine with muscle spasm. The muscle spasm protects the spine, but is in fact incredibly painful as it compresses discs in the spine. The pain from the protective muscle spasm can create more muscle spasm, it’s a vicious cycle!

The good news is reducing the muscle spasm and pain via physiotherapy naturally encourages a positive cycle where muscle spasm is decreased and mobility is restored.

What Therapy Can Help?

The easiest way to achieve healing is by improving the spine’s suppleness throughout its length. This reduces strain on the damaged tissues and reduces the local inflammation and muscle spasm. In the first instance we usually use Theraflex to improve the supple elasticity and alignment of the spine. The physiotherapist uses a special handset to help them realign the spine and re-introduce mobility to the area.

The aim is to encourage the bodies natural healing process. Uniquely, with this therapy the entire spine is treated, greatly reducing the likelihood of future episodes. It is an excellent long term solution for spinal problems.

When there is MRI evidence of a disc bulge with nerve root compression then IDD therapy is used. This is an effective way to relieve pressure on the disc and spinal nerve roots. It is a sophisticated form of traction that uses computed pulling forces to distract targeted spinal segments. This relieves pressure on the nerves as they exit the spine. The treatment is comfortable and non-invasive.

The Importance of Progressive Rehabilitation

When people start to experience chronic pain they tend to reduce their activity to minimise the pain. In fact, the opposite should happen. It is crucial to progressively increase activity.

When activity is increased in the right way pain should subside after the first 5-10 minutes of exercise. This is because the brain becomes overwhelmed with information and the pain soon goes off the radar. Physiotherapists know how you can use this pain free exercise to strengthen and mobilise the muscles and joints. The brain has a massive flexibility to turn up or down it’s sensitivity to pain and can even create or reduce inflammation. Pain is actually not indicative of how much damage an area has. At a subconscious level the brain thinks that if activity is happening, then things must be improving. So exercise is a very helpful way to reduce pain. Your physiotherapist can help you work towards a rehabilitative exercise regime that will promote healing.

How Can I Avoid Spinal Pain?

  • Keep your back strong and supple. Regular exercise will help, so try and stay active.
  • Make sure you lift heavy objects correctly.
  • Maintain a good posture when sitting, driving and standing.
  • Wear flat shoes with cushioned soles.
  • Avoid sudden movements.
  • Too much upper body weight can strain the back, so losing weight may help.

Theraflex (bionic mobilisation)

Theraflex treatment is a form of bionic mobilisation for the spine. It gives the physiotherapist the ability to progressively restore movement of the spine wherever it has become restricted, relaxing tight muscles and helping to relieve trapped nerves.

IDD Therapy (spinal decompression)

IDD Therapy is the number one non-invasive spinal disc treatment, for people suffering with back or neck pain which has proved challenging to improve with standard physiotherapy, osteopathy or chiropractic treatment.

CS1-Shockwave

CS1 Shockwave is a cell level treatment that promotes healing and reduces pain. The treatment involves directing intense pressure pulses into the body at the site of the pain and injury. It is ideal for treating challenging tendon and ligament injuries, as well as long-standing spinal pain.
