Muscle Trauma or Muscle Strain

Muscle trauma or the so called muscle strain is an injury in the muscle tendon unit. It can be classified as mild, moderate or severe. Overstretching and muscle spasm are the main causes of muscle trauma, this is often the result of over exertion or miscalculated movements. Symptoms include stiffness, swelling and pain. Bruising may appear and this is considered a good sign as blood which becomes trapped within the tissues will soon begin to breakdown releasing chemicals that cause pain.

Your physiotherapist will conduct an examinations to determine the most suitable treatment for your case. The treatment options include electro-therapy such as long wave ultrasound, massage, stretching and advice on progression of return to sporting activity. The treatment will help clear blood that has become trapped within the muscles in order to reduce the pain and improve the healing. Muscle trauma is not limited to athletes- anyone can suffer from this pain, especially  vulnerable are those who engaged in heavy and demanding work.
